The Earnslaw New is a hand-built wooden model boat painted solid red and white. Its materials include rosewood, mahogany, teak, ebony, and more. Details include tall wooden towers joined by rigging, hand-built wooden benches, a rope crane, see-through 3-D upper and lower decks, metal and wooden top-deck fences, wooden fences around the lower deck, see-through windows, a single propeller, and other ornaments.
The model rests on a painted wooden stand supported by two crafted wooden poles, with a golden metal plate marked “Earnslaw” attached to the stand. It is built by hand using original plans and pictures, with months of research informing its design. It ships fully assembled and ready to display.
The TSS Earnslaw was a 1912 Edwardian vintage twin screw steamer operating on Lake Wakatipu in New Zealand. At 48 metres long, it was the lake’s biggest boat. Named for Mount Earnslaw, a 2889 metre peak at the head of the lake, it became a valuable vessel for the New Zealand Railways and was known as the “Lady of the Lake.” After construction, it was dismantled and took 6 months to rebuild.
The ship is described as one of Central Otago’s oldest tourist attractions and the southern hemisphere’s only remaining commercial passenger-carrying coal-fired steamship. In March 1990, it carried Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip; other royal passengers included the King and Queen of Belgium and the Prince of Thailand. It also appeared briefly as an Amazon River boat in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008).
