Bonsai Boy Professional Bonsai Soil is a natural, non-toxic, highly absorbent ceramic granule for bonsai soil mixes. Use it blended with your soil mix or by itself. It helps provide free passage of air and water to roots while significantly reducing soil compaction.
The soil is made by expanding and vitrifying selected shale in a rotary kiln at temperatures in excess of 2000 degrees F. This process makes it sterile and environmentally inert. It has a generally neutral pH, is dimensionally stable, and will not degrade like other amending products, so it does not need to be reapplied year after year.
The granules absorb excess water during rain or watering, then slowly release it as the soil dries. A good bonsai soil profile is approximately 25% water, 25% air, and 50% solid particulate matter. When soils compact, solid particles press together and squeeze out water and air; with less pore space, air, water, and nutrients move less freely, and the favorable environment for beneficial microbial activity in a healthy growing medium is lost.
