This is a fully assembled model of the wartime version of the US Coast Guard 82. It is 100% hand built from scratch using the plank on frame construction method.
The first prototype took months of study using plans and pictures, and the first production was supervised by an actual US Coast Guard veteran. Details include the Boston Whaler, 81mm mortar with platform, machine guns on tripod, boat davit, suction hose, drums, fire hose, windshield wipers, engine hatches, and many more.
The model rests on a solid wood base with metal nameplate. It represents the United States Coast Guard Point Class Cutters, the 82 foot patrol vessels designed to replace the aging 83 foot wooden hull patrol boat. They featured a mild steel hull and an aluminum superstructure and were used for law enforcement and search and rescue along the coasts of the United States and the Caribbean.
A total of 79 Point-class cutters were used beginning in 1960, and at the request of the U.S. Navy, 26 were transported to Vietnam to serve with Coast Guard crews under U.S. Navy control during Operation Market Time.
