Despite its instability, the warship Vasa set sail and quickly foundered after encountering a strong wind. Swedish King Gustavus Adolphus, eager for it to join the Baltic fleet in the Thirty Years War, pushed for the voyage despite structural issues. In the 1961 recovery, marine archaeologists found thousands of artifacts and remains of at least 15 people in and around the hull of the Vasa ship Sweden. Items included clothing, weapons, cannons, tools, coins, cutlery, food, drink, and six of the ten sails. The Vasa ship was lavishly decorated and heavily armed, making it one of the largest warships of its time.
